Vol. 369 No. 8

Written Answers. - Coolock (Dublin) School.

221.

asked the Minister for Education if he is aware of the serious crisis facing Coláiste Dhulaigh, Coolock, Dublin 5 where, as a result of the collapse of the heating system, approximately 20 rooms are without any form of heating, and that this number is expected to increase as the year goes on; that the lack of materials for woodwork, art and physical education classes has meant that the school cannot follow the Department syllabus; if, in view of the importance of the school to the area, which has 1,242 boys and girls attending day classes, 704 adults attending day-time courses, and 930 adults attending night classes, he will indicate the measures it is intended to take to assist the school; and if he will make a statement on the matter.

The City of Dublin Vocational Education Committee is responsible for the operation of this school.

The Committee has sought capital funding from my Department for the installation of a new heating system. It recently submitted detailed proposals which are under examination. My Department will be in touch with the committee as soon as possible. The provision of class materials is a matter, in the first instance, for the committee, which is charged with making whatever provision it considers appropriate from its annual financial scheme.
